The three branches and how to attack each
NEET Chemistry isn't one subject but three, and treating them the same is the classic mistake. Split your preparation by branch, because the study method that works for Inorganic fails for Physical.
- ✓Physical Chemistry: concept- and formula-heavy (mole concept, thermodynamics, equilibrium, electrochemistry, kinetics). Learn the derivation logic, then drill numericals until they're fast.
- ✓Organic Chemistry: reasoning-based - reaction mechanisms, GOC (general organic chemistry), named reactions. Understand why a reaction happens; rote learning collapses under NEET's twists.
- ✓Inorganic Chemistry: memory-based and almost entirely NCERT - periodic trends, chemical bonding, coordination compounds, p/d/f-block. The single highest-yield area per hour of study.
Where the marks live: high-weight chapters
Year after year a handful of chapters carry the most questions. Prioritise these for your first and deepest passes across the three branches:
- ✓Physical: Mole Concept & Stoichiometry, Thermodynamics, Equilibrium, Electrochemistry, and Chemical Kinetics.
- ✓Organic: General Organic Chemistry (the foundation), Hydrocarbons, Alcohols/Phenols/Ethers, Aldehydes/Ketones/Acids, and Biomolecules.
- ✓Inorganic: Chemical Bonding, Periodic Table & Periodicity, Coordination Compounds, and the p-block.
NCERT is non-negotiable
For Inorganic Chemistry and much of Organic, NCERT is the exam - lines, tables, exceptions and even the 'note' boxes turn into questions. Read every page, then re-read. Only after you've mastered NCERT should you use a reference book to add depth to Physical numericals and Organic mechanisms.
The trap is collecting many coaching modules and skimming them. One thorough NCERT pass plus targeted practice beats ten skimmed sources. Depth on the standard text is what NEET rewards.
Convert reading into marks
Chemistry sticks through retrieval, not re-reading. After each chapter, close the book and test yourself with MCQs, read the explanation for every miss, and revisit weak spots after a couple of days. For Physical, that means timed numericals; for Organic, mechanism-based questions; for Inorganic, rapid factual recall.
A good weekly rhythm mixes all three branches so none goes cold, and interleaves Biology and Physics too - because on exam day the paper jumps across subjects without warning.
