Mnemonics: turn information into hooks
Mnemonics are memory shortcuts that attach hard-to-remember information to something easy. Acronyms (a word made from first letters), acrostics (a memorable sentence whose word-initials cue a list), rhymes, and silly associations all work by giving your brain a hook to grab. The order of the rainbow, the planets, the notes on a stave - most people remember these for life through a mnemonic learned once.
They're perfect for arbitrary facts that have no logic to lean on: lists, sequences, formulas, spellings. The stranger, funnier or more vivid the mnemonic, the better it sticks - your brain remembers the unusual far more easily than the ordinary.
The memory palace (method of loci)
The memory palace is the technique memory champions rely on, and it exploits a quirk of the brain: we're far better at remembering places than abstract facts. You picture a familiar location - your home, your route to college - and mentally 'place' the things you want to remember at specific spots along a route through it. To recall them, you walk the route in your mind and collect each item.
It sounds elaborate but it's remarkably powerful for ordered information: a speech, a process, a list of points. Make each mental image vivid, exaggerated and interactive (the more absurd, the more memorable), and reuse the same familiar locations so the 'building' becomes second nature.

Chunking and understanding
Your working memory can only hold a few items at once, which is why a long string of digits is hard to hold - unless you chunk it. Grouping information into meaningful units (a phone number as three chunks, not ten digits) lets you hold far more. Look for patterns and categories that let you bundle small facts into bigger, meaningful blocks.
Even more powerful is understanding. Information you truly understand is dramatically easier to remember than facts memorised in isolation, because understanding connects new material to what you already know. Whenever you can, learn the 'why' behind a fact - meaningful memory is far stickier than rote memory.
Visualisation and association
The brain remembers images and stories far better than abstract words, so convert what you're learning into pictures. To remember that a person's name is Rose, picture a rose; to remember a biological process, imagine it as a vivid scene. The more senses and emotion you involve, the stronger the trace.
Association ties new information to something you already know well. Linking a new concept to a familiar one, or a foreign word to a similar-sounding word in your language, gives your memory a ready-made anchor. These techniques feel playful, but they're doing real cognitive work.
