Most candidates prepare for Wipro exactly as they prepare for every other placement test, which leaves one component untouched: the written communication round. Aptitude practice does nothing for it, and it is scored on things - structure, grammar, clarity - that no amount of quantitative revision improves. These thirty questions cover the three multiple-choice sections, and the section after them covers the round that practice sets usually ignore.

The component most candidates skip

Wipro's graduate hiring has historically included a written communication component alongside the usual aptitude sections. That is unusual among comparable tests, and it produces a predictable pattern: candidates arrive fluent in percentages and ratios, then write a rambling, ungrammatical response to a prompt they have never practised.

The round rewards a different skill and therefore needs separate practice. Aptitude is scored right or wrong; writing is scored on whether an assessor can follow your argument and whether the language is correct. Those are trainable in a week, but only if you know they are being tested - which is the entire reason this article covers them.

What the test covers, and the caveat

The multiple-choice portion has broadly covered quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning and verbal ability, with coding and written communication handled as separate rounds depending on the hiring track. Wipro changes this structure between cycles, so treat any pattern you find online - including this description - as indicative rather than current.

The five mistakes that cost the most marks

  • Preparing only multiple-choice sections. A written round is scored on structure, clarity and grammar, none of which improve through aptitude practice.
  • Writing at length in the written round. Assessors want a clear structure and correct language, not volume - a tight response outscores a rambling one.
  • Skipping verbal ability. It is the section most candidates assume needs no preparation, which is exactly why preparing it pays off.
  • Subtracting a discount from a markup. A 40% markup followed by a 25% discount is a 5% profit, not 15% - the two act on different bases.
  • Practising untimed. Every quantitative topic here is school-level; the entire difficulty is doing them fast under pressure.

Practice set 1: quantitative aptitude

1. A shopkeeper marks an item 40% above cost and then gives a 25% discount. What is the profit percentage?

5%. Take the cost price as 100 for convenience. The marked price is 140, and a 25% discount on that is 140 × 0.75 = 105, so the profit is 5%. The common error is to subtract - 40 − 25 = 15% - which ignores that the markup acts on cost price and the discount acts on the larger marked price. Whenever two percentages apply in sequence, multiply the factors.

2. If 18 workers build a wall in 20 days, how many days will 24 workers take?

15 days. The job is a fixed quantity of work: 18 × 20 = 360 worker-days. With 24 workers, 360/24 = 15 days. Setting up the constant first - men × days for the same job - handles every variant of this question, including those that change both the workforce and the working hours.

3. The average age of 8 people increases by 2 years when a 20-year-old is replaced. How old is the new person?

36. The average rising by 2 across 8 people means the total rose by 8 × 2 = 16 years. That entire increase comes from one substitution, so the new person is 20 + 16 = 36. Working in totals rather than averages is what makes replacement questions immediate; trying to reason about the average directly is what makes them confusing.

4. A sum of money doubles in 8 years at simple interest. What is the rate?

12.5% per annum. Doubling means the interest earned equals the principal: P = P × R × 8/100. The principal cancels, leaving R × 8 = 100, so R = 12.5%. The same cancellation gives the general rule - if a sum multiplies by k under simple interest, then R × T = 100(k − 1) - so tripling in 8 years would need 25%.

5. Two trains, 120 m and 180 m long, run in opposite directions at 40 km/h and 50 km/h. How long do they take to cross each other?

12 seconds. Crossing covers the sum of the lengths, 300 m. Moving in opposite directions, the relative speed is 40 + 50 = 90 km/h, which is 90 × 5/18 = 25 m/s. The time is 300/25 = 12 s. Two things decide these questions: whether the speeds add (opposite) or subtract (same direction), and converting to metres per second before dividing.

6. What is 37.5% of 640?

240. Recognising 37.5% as 3/8 turns this into 640 × 3/8 = 240 in one step, with no decimal multiplication at all. A handful of these equivalences - 12.5% = 1/8, 16⅔% = 1/6, 37.5% = 3/8, 62.5% = 5/8, 87.5% = 7/8 - remove the arithmetic from a large share of percentage questions.

7. A boat covers 30 km downstream in 2 hours and returns in 3 hours. Find the speed of the stream.

2.5 km/h. Downstream speed is 30/2 = 15 km/h and upstream is 30/3 = 10 km/h. The stream is half the difference, (15 − 10)/2 = 2.5 km/h, and the boat in still water is half the sum, 12.5 km/h. Reading the two speeds off the distances first, then applying half-sum and half-difference, keeps this from turning into simultaneous equations.

8. The ages of A and B are in the ratio 5:7. After 6 years the ratio becomes 3:4. Find A's present age.

30 years. Write the ages as 5x and 7x, so (5x + 6)/(7x + 6) = 3/4. Cross-multiplying gives 20x + 24 = 21x + 18, so x = 6 and A is 30 with B at 42. Verify before moving on: after 6 years they are 36 and 48, and 36:48 does reduce to 3:4. The check costs five seconds and catches every cross-multiplication slip.

9. A number increased by 20% becomes 96. Find the number.

80. The relation is 1.2n = 96, so n = 96/1.2 = 80. The trap is to reduce 96 by 20% instead, which gives 76.8 - wrong because the 20% was applied to the original number, not to 96. To reverse a percentage increase you divide by the factor; you never subtract the same percentage.

10. Find the compound interest on 8,000 at 5% per annum for 2 years.

820. The amount is 8000 × (1.05)² = 8000 × 1.1025 = 8,820, so the interest is 820. Simple interest over the same period would be 800, and the 20 difference is exactly the interest earned on the first year's interest - which is the whole of what compounding means and worth seeing numerically at least once.

11. A can finish a job in 12 days and B in 18 days. They work together for 4 days, then A leaves. How long does B take to finish?

8 days. Their combined rate is 1/12 + 1/18 = 5/36 of the job per day, so in 4 days they complete 20/36 = 5/9. The remaining 4/9 is done by B alone at 1/18 per day: (4/9) × 18 = 8 days. Work questions become mechanical once you convert days into per-day rates and track the fraction of the job completed rather than the days elapsed.

12. A 60-litre mixture has milk and water in the ratio 2:1. How much water must be added to make the ratio 1:1?

20 litres. The mixture holds 40 litres of milk and 20 of water. Adding water leaves the milk unchanged at 40, and a 1:1 ratio therefore needs 40 litres of water - so 20 more. The reliable method in every mixture question is to identify the quantity that does not change, then work out what the other must become.

Practice set 2: logical reasoning

13. Find the next term: 3, 7, 15, 31, 63, ?

127. The differences 4, 8, 16, 32 double each time, which points to the rule: each term is twice the previous one plus one. 63 × 2 + 1 = 127. When differences themselves form a geometric pattern, the rule is almost always multiplicative rather than additive - check the ratio of consecutive terms before hunting for a more elaborate formula.

14. If MONDAY is coded NPOEBZ, how is FRIDAY coded?

GSJEBZ. Each letter moves forward by one position: M→N, O→P, N→O, D→E, A→B, Y→Z. Applying the same shift to FRIDAY gives G, S, J, E, B, Z. Always confirm the rule on every letter of the given word before applying it - a shift that works for the first two letters and fails on the third means the rule is something else.

15. Pointing at a photograph, a man says, "She is the daughter of my grandfather's only son." How is she related to him?

She is his sister. His grandfather's only son must be his own father, so she is his father's daughter. Work these from the inside out, resolving one relationship at a time into a person you can name, rather than trying to hold the whole chain in mind at once.

16. Complete the letter series: A, C, F, J, O, ?

U. The positions are 1, 3, 6, 10, 15 - the triangular numbers, with gaps of 2, 3, 4, 5. The next gap is 6, giving position 21, which is U. Converting letters to their numeric positions is the first move in any letter series; patterns that are invisible as letters are usually obvious as numbers.

17. In a row of 40 students, A is 15th from the left. What is A's position from the right?

26th. The relation is total − position from left + 1, so 40 − 15 + 1 = 26. The +1 exists because A is counted in both directions, and dropping it - giving 25 - is the standard error. Sanity-check with a tiny case: in a row of 3, the 1st from the left is 3rd from the right, and 3 − 1 + 1 = 3 confirms the formula.

18. If A + B means A is the father of B, and A − B means A is the wife of B, what does P + Q − R mean?

P is R's father-in-law. Read left to right: P + Q makes P the father of Q, and Q − R makes Q the wife of R. So P is the father of R's wife, which makes him R's father-in-law. Symbol-based relation questions are safest handled by translating each symbol into a sentence first and only then combining the sentences.

19. All roses are flowers. Some flowers fade quickly. Does it follow that some roses fade quickly?

No. The roses might sit entirely inside the part of the flower category that does not fade quickly - nothing in the statements rules that out. A conclusion follows only if it holds in every arrangement the premises permit, and here one valid arrangement makes it false. Drawing the two possible Venn diagrams settles this faster than reasoning verbally.

20. Find the odd one out: 8, 27, 64, 100, 125.

100. The others are perfect cubes - 2³, 3³, 4³ and 5³ - while 100 is a perfect square but not a cube. When a list is full of familiar-looking numbers, test squares and cubes first; those two rules account for most odd-one-out questions built on numbers.

21. A person walks 10 m north, turns right and walks 15 m, then turns right and walks 10 m. How far is he from the start, and in which direction?

15 m east. Starting at the origin, 10 m north reaches (0, 10). Turning right faces east, so 15 m reaches (15, 10). Turning right again faces south, and 10 m returns to (15, 0). The northward and southward legs cancel, leaving 15 m due east. Plotting coordinates rather than visualising turns removes the direction confusion entirely.

Practice set 3: verbal ability

22. Choose the word closest in meaning to "meticulous".

Careful, in the specific sense of showing precise attention to detail. It describes someone who checks small things deliberately, so "thorough" and "painstaking" are close matches while "hasty" is its opposite. Note that meticulous is about precision rather than speed - a meticulous worker is not necessarily slow, though the word often carries that suggestion.

23. Choose the word most nearly opposite to "candid".

Evasive. Candid means open and direct, saying what one actually thinks, so its opposite is holding back or deflecting - evasive, guarded, or reserved. "Dishonest" is a tempting answer but not quite right: a candid person can be sincerely mistaken, and the word is about openness rather than truthfulness.

24. Spot the error: "Neither of the two candidates were selected for the role."

"Were" should be "was". Neither is singular - it refers to not one of the two - so it takes a singular verb regardless of the plural noun that follows it. The same rule governs each, every, either and none in formal usage. The plural noun sitting immediately before the verb is what makes the error sound acceptable.

25. Fill in the blank: "He has been working here ___ 2019."

Since. Since introduces a point in time from which something has continued; for introduces a length of time. "Since 2019" and "for six years" are both correct, and "for 2019" is not. The test is simply whether the word after the blank names a moment or a duration.

26. What does the idiom "to let the cat out of the bag" mean?

To reveal a secret, usually by accident. It describes an unintended disclosure rather than a deliberate betrayal, which distinguishes it from "spill the beans" in careful usage, though the two are often treated as interchangeable. Idiom questions reward recognition, so read them in sets rather than trying to derive meanings from the literal words.

27. Give one word for "a person who speaks many languages".

Polyglot. The word joins poly, meaning many, with glot from the Greek for tongue - the same root that gives us glossary. Recognising these fragments is the efficient way through one-word-substitution questions: mono, bi and poly for number, phile and phobe for attraction and fear, cide for killing.

28. Convert to indirect speech: He said, "I am tired."

He said that he was tired. Two changes are required: the pronoun shifts from I to he to match the reporting speaker, and the tense moves back one step from am to was because the reporting verb said is in the past. Reported speech questions are almost entirely these two mechanical shifts, plus adjustments to words like today and here when the context demands them.

29. Change to passive voice: The manager will review the report.

The report will be reviewed by the manager. The object becomes the subject, the verb takes the appropriate form of be plus the past participle, and the original subject moves into a by-phrase. The tense must be preserved: will review is future, so will be reviewed is the only correct form - is reviewed or has been reviewed would change the meaning.

30. Choose the correctly spelt word: accomodate, accommodate, acommodate.

Accommodate - two c's and two m's. It is among the most frequently misspelt words in English, and the reliable memory aid is that it is large enough to accommodate two of each letter. Spelling questions in aptitude tests draw from a small, predictable set: accommodate, occurrence, necessary, embarrass, separate and definitely between them cover a large share of what appears.

The written communication round

This is the part that generic placement preparation misses. You are typically given a prompt and a fixed time, and the response is assessed on organisation, grammar, vocabulary and relevance - not on whether the assessor agrees with your position. That last point matters: there is no correct opinion to find, so time spent deciding what to argue is time taken from writing it well.

A workable structure is deliberately plain. Open with one sentence stating your position. Follow with two or three short paragraphs, each making a single point with a concrete example. Close with two sentences that restate the position without introducing anything new. This shape is easy to follow, easy to write under time pressure, and hard to lose marks on.

  • Spend the first minute deciding your position and your two supporting points, then stop deciding and start writing.
  • One idea per paragraph. An assessor scanning for structure should be able to summarise each paragraph in a phrase.
  • Write shorter sentences than feels natural. Long sentences are where subject-verb agreement and tense errors appear.
  • Use concrete examples. A specific instance is more persuasive than an abstract claim and takes fewer words.
  • Reserve the last two minutes for re-reading. Most correctable errors are agreement, tense and spelling - all visible on a careful second pass.

The quantitative and reasoning sections here reward the same thing every placement test rewards: recognising the question type quickly and executing a method you have already automated. That comes from timed repetition, not from learning new mathematics.

The written round is the genuine differentiator, and it is unusual in being improvable in a week. Write four or five timed responses to different prompts, re-read each for agreement and tense errors, and you will have prepared something most of the room has not.
