Geography Quiz Questions with Answers (World and India)

By the QUFF Team

Geography questions look like simple recall and are full of traps - because the answer usually depends on the exact wording. Largest desert or largest hot desert? Longest river or greatest discharge? Highest peak in India or highest peak entirely within India? This set covers the recurring questions with those distinctions made explicit, split between world geography and India, plus the Indian state facts that appear in almost every competitive exam.

Which is the largest continent, and which is the smallest?

Asia is the largest; Australia, or Oceania depending on the classification used, is the smallest. There are seven continents in the conventional model.

What is the Ring of Fire?

A horseshoe-shaped belt around the Pacific Ocean with intense volcanic and earthquake activity, caused by the movement of tectonic plates along its margins. A large majority of the world's active volcanoes lie along it.

Which canal links the Mediterranean to the Red Sea, and which links the Atlantic to the Pacific?

The Suez Canal connects the Mediterranean and the Red Sea; the Panama Canal connects the Atlantic and the Pacific. Both are perennial quiz answers.

What is the largest plateau in the world?

The Tibetan Plateau, often called the Roof of the World.

Which is the longest mountain range on land?

The Andes in South America. If underwater ranges are counted, the mid-ocean ridge system is far longer - another wording-dependent answer.

Latitude, longitude and time

What is the latitude of the Tropic of Cancer, and of the Arctic Circle?

The Tropic of Cancer is at about 23.5° North and the Tropic of Capricorn at about 23.5° South. The Arctic and Antarctic Circles lie at about 66.5° North and South.

Where does the Prime Meridian pass, and what is Indian Standard Time based on?

The Prime Meridian (0° longitude) passes through Greenwich, London. Indian Standard Time is based on the 82.5° East meridian, which passes near Mirzapur, making IST five and a half hours ahead of UTC.

How many latitudes and longitudes are there in total?

There are 181 parallels of latitude counting the Equator and both poles, with 90 in each hemisphere, and 360 meridians of longitude.

Why is the International Date Line not a straight line?

Because it is deviated to avoid splitting countries and island groups into two different calendar days, so it bends around territories in the Pacific rather than following the 180° meridian exactly.

Indian physical geography

Which eight Indian states does the Tropic of Cancer pass through?

Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura and Mizoram. This is one of the most reliably asked questions in Indian geography, so learn the list in that west-to-east order.

Which is the longest river in India, and the longest flowing entirely within India?

The Ganga is the longest river in India. The Godavari is the longest that flows entirely within Indian territory - a distinction examiners use constantly.

Which major peninsular rivers flow westward into the Arabian Sea?

The Narmada and the Tapi. Most peninsular rivers flow east into the Bay of Bengal, which is why these two are asked so often; they flow through rift valleys rather than forming deltas.

What is the highest mountain peak in India?

Kangchenjunga, at about 8,586 m, on the border of Sikkim and Nepal - also the third-highest peak in the world. Note that Everest is not in India.

What is the southernmost point of India?

Indira Point, in the Nicobar Islands. Kanyakumari is the southernmost point of the Indian mainland, which is the distinction the question is usually testing.

Which Indian state has the longest coastline?

Gujarat. Note that the state with the longest coastline is not the one with the largest coastal population or the busiest ports, which is where confusion usually creeps in.

Indian states and union territories

How many states and union territories does India have?

28 states and 8 union territories. Ladakh became a union territory in 2019, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli was merged with Daman and Diu into a single union territory in January 2020, which brought the count of union territories to eight.

Which is the largest Indian state by area, and which is the smallest?

Rajasthan is the largest by area and Goa the smallest. Uttar Pradesh is the most populous state, and Sikkim the least populous.

Which Indian state shares its border with the greatest number of other states?

Uttar Pradesh, which borders eight states. Questions about how many states a given state borders are common, so it is worth tracing the map once rather than memorising a list.

Which Indian states share a border with Bangladesh?

West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram. Border-country questions of this type recur across SSC and railway exams.

What separates India from Sri Lanka?

The Palk Strait and the Gulf of Mannar, with the chain of shoals known as Adam's Bridge or Rama Setu lying between them.

Climate, soils and agriculture

  • India has a tropical monsoon climate; the south-west monsoon arrives around June and retreats by September, and the north-east monsoon brings winter rain to Tamil Nadu.
  • Mawsynram and Cherrapunji in Meghalaya are among the wettest places on Earth, a result of orographic rainfall against the hills.
  • Alluvial soil covers the northern plains and is the most agriculturally productive; black (regur) soil in the Deccan suits cotton; laterite soil forms under heavy rainfall with leaching; red soil covers much of the peninsula.
  • Kharif crops are sown with the monsoon and harvested in autumn (rice, maize, cotton); rabi crops are sown in winter and harvested in spring (wheat, mustard, gram); zaid is the short summer season.
  • The Green Revolution raised wheat and rice yields substantially, concentrated in Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh.

How to revise geography

  • Always read the qualifier before answering. 'Hot desert', 'by volume', 'entirely within India' and 'mainland' each change the correct answer, and that is deliberate.
  • Use a physical map rather than lists. Rivers, ranges and borders are spatial facts, and a list of names without a mental map does not survive exam pressure.
  • Learn the confusable pairs together: Ganga and Godavari, Everest and Kangchenjunga, Indira Point and Kanyakumari, Sahara and Antarctica.
  • Trace the Tropic of Cancer states and the border states once on a map by hand. It fixes them faster than any number of readings.
  • Test yourself in mixed sets so you have to identify the question type before answering - which is what exams actually require.

The bottom line

Now go test yourself

Geography questions are less about memory than about precision. The examiner's qualifier - hot desert, by discharge, entirely within India, mainland - is doing the real work, and candidates who read past it lose marks on facts they actually knew. Learn the confusable pairs as pairs, and trace the spatial facts on a map rather than reading them as lists.

Then test in mixed sets, so identifying the question type becomes automatic. Free general knowledge, SSC and UPSC-style quizzes on QUFF explain every answer, which is how the distinctions stop being traps.

Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura and Mizoram - eight states, best learnt in that west-to-east order.

Which is the longest river in India?

The Ganga. The Godavari is the longest river flowing entirely within India, which is a separate question examiners use to catch people out.
