The written exam: two papers
The NDA written test has two papers. Paper I is Mathematics (300 marks) and Paper II is the General Ability Test or GAT (600 marks), so together the GAT carries the greater weight but Maths is the more concentrated challenge. Both have negative marking, so accuracy is essential.
Because the syllabus is defined and largely Class 11-12 level, the written stage is very learnable with disciplined preparation - the differentiator is speed, accuracy and breadth across the GAT.
Mathematics strategy
NDA Maths covers Class 11-12 topics - Algebra, Calculus, Trigonometry, Coordinate Geometry, Vectors, Matrices & Determinants, and Probability & Statistics. It rewards the same approach as any competitive maths paper:
- ✓Master concepts from NCERT and a standard reference, deriving results rather than memorising blindly.
- ✓Build formula sheets and practise timed problems until methods are automatic.
- ✓Solve previous-year NDA papers - the pattern and question style repeat.
- ✓Respect negative marking: attempt what you're confident of and avoid wild guesses.
The General Ability Test (GAT)
The GAT is broad, and its breadth is what trips up Maths-focused aspirants. It has two parts - English, and General Knowledge spanning multiple subjects:
- ✓English: grammar, vocabulary, comprehension and usage - steady reading and practice.
- ✓Physics and Chemistry: roughly Class 10-12 level, NCERT-based.
- ✓General Science, History, Freedom Struggle, Geography and Polity: static GK from standard sources.
- ✓Current Affairs: national and international events from the last several months.
The SSB interview
Clearing the written exam is only half the journey. The five-day Services Selection Board (SSB) interview assesses Officer-Like Qualities through psychological tests, group tasks and a personal interview - it can't be crammed. Start building the underlying traits early: physical fitness, clear communication, decision-making, leadership and general awareness.
Practise expressing your thoughts clearly, stay genuinely informed about current affairs and defense matters, and work on teamwork and initiative in everyday life. The SSB rewards authentic, consistent personality development far more than last-minute preparation.
