Direction-heavy rather than algebra-heavy: most of the difficulty is in vector directions rather than in the magnitudes. Because of that, the fastest improvement usually comes from drilling the right-hand rule until it is automatic rather than from working more numerical problems.

Common mistakes in Magnetism

  • Forgetting that the magnetic force does no work. It is always perpendicular to velocity, so it changes direction but never speed - which is why a charged particle in a uniform field moves in a circle at constant speed.
  • Using B = μ₀I/2R for a long wire or μ₀I/2πr for a loop centre. The two expressions look similar and are routinely swapped under time pressure.
  • Assuming a current-carrying wire always experiences a force in a magnetic field. If the wire is parallel to B, sinθ is zero and so is the force.
  • Getting the right-hand rule backwards for a negative charge. The rule gives the direction for conventional positive current; for an electron the force is opposite.
  • Treating n in B = μ₀nI as the total number of turns. It is turns per unit length, so a question quoting total turns and solenoid length needs that division first.

Why does a magnetic field not change a particle's speed?

Because the force qv × B is always perpendicular to the velocity, so it does no work on the particle. It changes the direction of motion continuously while the kinetic energy stays exactly constant.

How do I decide the direction of the magnetic field around a wire?

Point your right thumb along the conventional current and your fingers curl in the direction of B. The field forms closed circles around the wire, which is why it has no beginning or end - and why there are no magnetic monopoles.
