Common mistakes in Modern Physics

  • Using E(n) = −13.6/n² for any atom. It applies only to hydrogen and hydrogen-like single-electron ions such as He⁺ and Li²⁺, where the Z² factor matters.
  • Confusing the work function with the stopping potential. The work function is a property of the metal; the stopping potential depends on the incident frequency as well.
  • Thinking brighter light gives photoelectrons more energy. Intensity changes how many electrons are emitted; only frequency changes their maximum kinetic energy - which is exactly what the photon model explained and the wave model could not.
  • Mixing electronvolts and joules mid-calculation. Convert once at the start and stay in one unit; 1 eV = 1.6 × 10⁻¹⁹ J.
  • Treating half-life as though decay were linear. After two half-lives one quarter remains, not zero - decay is exponential, so a fixed fraction is lost per interval rather than a fixed amount.
