Common mistakes in Waves
- Getting the Doppler sign convention wrong. Fix it by reasoning rather than memory: if the source and observer approach each other the observed frequency must rise, so choose the signs that produce that - then the formula checks itself.
- Assuming a closed organ pipe produces all harmonics. It supports only odd harmonics, and its fundamental is half that of an open pipe of the same length.
- Confusing wave speed with particle speed. The wave travels at v = fλ, while an individual particle oscillates about its mean position with a completely different, continuously varying speed.
- Treating v = √(T/μ) as though μ were the total mass. It is mass per unit length, so a question giving total mass and length needs that division first.
- Forgetting that beats are heard at |f₁ − f₂|, not at the difference in angular frequencies, and that the ear detects beats only when the two frequencies are reasonably close.

What is the difference between a standing wave and a travelling wave?
A travelling wave transports energy through the medium; a standing wave, formed by two identical waves moving in opposite directions, does not transport net energy. Standing waves have fixed nodes where the displacement is always zero, which travelling waves do not.
Why does the pitch of a passing siren drop as it goes by?
As the source approaches, successive wavefronts are emitted from closer positions, so they arrive more frequently and the pitch is higher. After it passes, the reverse happens. The change is in the observed frequency only - the source emits the same frequency throughout.
