Common mistakes in Oscillations

  • Assuming any back-and-forth motion is simple harmonic. It qualifies only when the restoring force is proportional to displacement, which is why a pendulum is SHM at small angles but not at large ones.
  • Mixing up ω and f. Angular frequency ω is 2πf, and substituting one for the other multiplies or divides your answer by about 6.28.
  • Assuming the period of a spring-mass system depends on gravity. It does not - T = 2π√(m/k) holds horizontally, vertically and on the Moon. Only the equilibrium position shifts.
  • Forgetting that acceleration is maximum where velocity is zero. At the extremes the body is momentarily at rest with maximum restoring force; at the mean position it is fastest with zero acceleration.
  • Using the amplitude in place of the instantaneous displacement in energy questions, which gives the total energy rather than the requested kinetic or potential share.

Not for small oscillations, which is the case JEE almost always asks about - the period depends on length and g only. At large amplitudes the approximation breaks down and the period does increase slightly, and questions sometimes test that you know why.

How is energy distributed during SHM?

The total stays constant while its split shifts continuously: all potential at the extremes, all kinetic at the mean position. Both the kinetic and potential energies oscillate at twice the frequency of the displacement, which is a frequently asked detail.
