Common mistakes in Ray Optics
- Applying the Cartesian sign convention inconsistently. Measure everything from the pole, with distances against the incident light negative - and write the signs down before substituting rather than deciding them mid-calculation.
- Swapping the mirror and lens formulas. The mirror uses 1/v + 1/u and the lens uses 1/v − 1/u, and the magnification formulas differ by a minus sign too.
- Ignoring what the sign of magnification means. A negative m indicates an inverted image, so a question asking about orientation is answered by the sign, not the magnitude.
- Forgetting that total internal reflection requires light to travel from denser to rarer medium. Going the other way, however large the angle, produces refraction rather than TIR.
- Using centimetres for f when calculating power. Power is the reciprocal of the focal length in metres, so a 20 cm lens has a power of 5 D, not 0.05 D.
