Common mistakes in Matrices

  • Assuming matrix multiplication is commutative. AB and BA are generally different and may not both be defined - and questions are constructed to catch exactly this assumption.
  • Reversing the order when transposing or inverting a product. Both (AB)ᵀ and (AB)⁻¹ reverse the factors, which is easy to write incorrectly at speed.
  • Inverting a matrix without checking the determinant. A singular matrix has no inverse, and a question with a parameter often hinges on finding the value that makes |A| = 0.
  • Concluding that AB = 0 implies A = 0 or B = 0. Unlike real numbers, non-zero matrices can multiply to the zero matrix.
  • Treating every diagonal entry of a skew-symmetric matrix as arbitrary. They must all be zero, since aᵢᵢ = −aᵢᵢ forces aᵢᵢ = 0.

When the coefficient matrix is non-singular, that is |A| ≠ 0. If |A| = 0 the system has either no solution or infinitely many, and which one it is depends on whether the corresponding determinants in Cramer's rule also vanish.

Can every square matrix be split into symmetric and skew-symmetric parts?

Yes, and uniquely: A = ½(A + Aᵀ) + ½(A − Aᵀ). The first term is symmetric and the second skew-symmetric, and this decomposition is asked directly often enough to be worth remembering.
