How Vector Algebra is asked
Compact, formula-driven and closely tied to 3D Geometry - many 3D questions are vector questions in disguise. Because the same few products answer most questions, this chapter converts practice into marks efficiently.
Cheat sheet
Vector Algebra formulas worth memorising
| Quantity | Formula |
|---|---|
| Dot product | a · b = |a||b| cosθ |
| Cross product | |a × b| = |a||b| sinθ |
| Perpendicular vectors | a · b = 0 |
| Parallel vectors | a × b = 0 |
| Projection of a on b | (a · b) / |b| |
| Area of a triangle | ½ |a × b| |
| Scalar triple product | [a b c] = a · (b × c) = volume of parallelepiped |
| Coplanarity condition | [a b c] = 0 |

Common mistakes in Vector Algebra
- Treating the cross product as commutative. a × b = −(b × a), so reversing the order flips the direction of the result - which matters for areas with orientation and for normals to planes.
- Confusing the projection with the component vector. The projection (a · b)/|b| is a scalar; multiplying it by the unit vector along b gives the vector component.
- Using the dot product to test for parallel vectors. Parallel means the cross product is zero; the dot product being zero means perpendicular.
- Forgetting that the scalar triple product is zero for coplanar vectors. This is the standard test for coplanarity and appears in both vector and 3D geometry questions.
- Assuming the vector triple product is associative. a × (b × c) is not equal to (a × b) × c, and the expansion a × (b × c) = (a · c)b − (a · b)c has to be applied in the right order.

JEE Vector Algebra Quiz - FAQs
When do I use the dot product and when the cross product?
Use the dot product for anything involving angles, projections, work or perpendicularity - it returns a scalar. Use the cross product for areas, normals, torque and parallelism - it returns a vector perpendicular to both inputs.
What does the scalar triple product represent geometrically?
The volume of the parallelepiped formed by the three vectors. If it is zero the volume is zero, which means the three vectors lie in one plane - which is exactly the coplanarity test.
Is the jee vector algebra quiz free?
Yes - completely free, with no sign-up required. Type a topic, press start, and the AI generates an adaptive Vector Algebra quiz with an explanation for every answer.
Can teachers host this jee vector algebra quiz live for a class?
Yes - create a free teacher account, host a live room on "Vector Algebra", and students join with a 6-character code at quff.in/join. No student accounts needed.
