Common mistakes in Complex Numbers

  • Getting the argument in the wrong quadrant. arctan(y/x) alone does not identify the quadrant - check the signs of x and y before quoting the principal argument.
  • Assuming |z₁ + z₂| = |z₁| + |z₂|. Equality holds only when the two have the same argument; otherwise it is a strict inequality, and questions test exactly that condition.
  • Applying De Moivre's theorem to a non-integer power without care. For fractional exponents there are multiple values, and taking only one loses the other roots.
  • Forgetting that 1 + ω + ω² = 0. Nearly every roots-of-unity question is a straightforward application of that identity together with ω³ = 1.
  • Treating complex inequalities as valid. There is no ordering on the complex numbers, so z₁ > z₂ is meaningless - only real quantities such as moduli can be compared.
