Common mistakes in 3D Geometry

  • Using cos where sin is required for a line and a plane. The angle between a line and a plane is measured from the plane, not from the normal, which is why that formula uses sine while the plane-to-plane formula uses cosine.
  • Confusing direction ratios with direction cosines. Direction ratios are any proportional triple; direction cosines are the normalised version satisfying l² + m² + n² = 1.
  • Assuming two non-intersecting lines are parallel. In three dimensions they may be skew, which is why the shortest-distance formula exists at all.
  • Dropping the absolute value in the distance formula. Distance is non-negative; the sign only indicates which side of the plane the point lies on.
  • Taking the coefficients of a plane as a point on it. In ax + by + cz + d = 0 the triple (a, b, c) is the normal vector, not a position.

Move from the point along the plane's normal direction by twice the perpendicular distance. In practice: write the line through the point parallel to the normal, find where it meets the plane, and extend the same distance beyond that foot.

Lines that neither intersect nor are parallel - possible only in three dimensions, since they lie in different planes. The shortest distance between them is measured along the common perpendicular, which is what the b₁ × b₂ term supplies.
