How Rotational Motion is asked
Widely treated as one of the most demanding chapters in JEE Physics, and its questions tend to be long rather than numerous. The pattern worth knowing is that rotational questions usually combine with another chapter - energy conservation in rolling, or collisions with angular momentum conservation - so preparing it in isolation leaves you short in the paper.

Common mistakes in Rotational Motion
- Using a moment of inertia about the wrong axis. I is defined relative to a specific axis, and the same body has different values about its centre and its end - reach for the parallel-axis theorem rather than a remembered number.
- Assuming angular momentum is always conserved. It is conserved only when the net external torque is zero. A body rolling down an incline experiences torque about most axes, so conservation does not apply.
- Forgetting the rolling condition v = ωR. Rolling problems have two unknowns, and this relation is what makes them solvable - without it students end up with one equation and two variables.
- Adding only translational kinetic energy for a rolling body. A rolling object has both ½mv² and ½Iω², which is why a sphere and a ring released together do not arrive at the same time.
- Treating the centre of mass as the geometric centre for non-uniform bodies. It only coincides when the mass distribution is symmetric.

Because the share of energy going into rotation depends on the moment of inertia. A ring puts more of its energy into spinning than a solid sphere does, so less is left for translation and it arrives later - the result depends only on shape, not on mass or radius.

Around six standard bodies - rod, ring, disc, hollow sphere, solid sphere and hollow cylinder - about their standard axes. Anything else is reachable from those using the parallel and perpendicular axis theorems.
