Common mistakes in Laws of Motion
- Writing static friction as μN. Static friction is only ≤ μ(s)N - it takes whatever value is needed to prevent sliding, up to that maximum. Using the maximum when the body is not on the point of slipping gives the wrong answer.
- Assuming the normal force always equals mg. On an incline it is mg cosθ, in a lift it changes with the lift's acceleration, and on a banked road it has a horizontal component.
- Treating centripetal force as an extra force to be added to the free-body diagram. It is the net inward force, supplied by tension, friction, gravity or the normal force - never drawn separately.
- Forgetting the pseudo force when solving in an accelerating frame. Either work entirely in an inertial frame or add −ma consistently; mixing the two is the most common source of lost marks in lift and wedge problems.
- Assuming tension is the same throughout a string passing over a pulley with mass. It is equal on both sides only for a massless, frictionless pulley.
