NTA does not publish chapter-wise weightage, so any exact question count you see online is a coaching estimate drawn from past papers. What is dependable: Kinematics appears in nearly every JEE Main paper, and it is a prerequisite chapter rather than a self-contained one - Laws of Motion, Work-Energy and Rotational Motion all assume you can set up displacement, velocity and acceleration without thinking. Recent papers lean toward graph interpretation and relative motion rather than direct formula substitution.

Common mistakes in Kinematics
- Using v = u + at when acceleration is not constant. If a depends on time or position you must integrate - and a large share of JEE kinematics questions are built specifically to punish this reflex.
- Reading 'distance travelled in the 5th second' as 'distance in the first 5 seconds'. The first needs sₙ = u + a(2n − 1)/2; the second needs s = ut + ½at². For u = 0, a = 2 m/s² these give 9 m and 25 m.
- Confusing distance with displacement. Displacement can be zero while distance is not, so average speed and average velocity are different quantities and are often asked in the same question.
- Treating the two projectile components as coupled. Horizontal velocity stays constant and vertical motion is free fall - solving them independently is the entire method.
- Taking the slope of a v-t graph as displacement. Slope is acceleration; the area under the curve is displacement, and area below the axis counts as negative.
