Common mistakes in Chemical Bonding

  • Naming the shape from the hybridisation instead of from the lone pairs. Water is sp³ hybridised but bent, and ammonia is sp³ but pyramidal - the electron geometry and the molecular shape are different things.
  • Assuming polar bonds guarantee a polar molecule. Carbon dioxide and boron trifluoride have polar bonds and no net dipole because their symmetry cancels the vectors.
  • Forgetting that oxygen is paramagnetic. O₂ has two unpaired electrons in its antibonding molecular orbitals, which is the standard example of what molecular orbital theory explains and valence bond theory cannot.
  • Comparing bond lengths without using bond order. Higher bond order means shorter and stronger, which is how most NEET comparison questions in this chapter are meant to be answered.
  • Treating hydrogen bonding as available to any hydrogen. It requires hydrogen bonded to nitrogen, oxygen or fluorine - which is why hydrogen fluoride and water have anomalously high boiling points.
