Common mistakes in Chemical Bonding
- Predicting shape from bonded pairs while ignoring lone pairs. Ammonia is sp³ hybridised but pyramidal, not tetrahedral, and water is bent - the lone pairs occupy positions but do not appear in the shape's name.
- Assuming a molecule with polar bonds must be polar. Carbon dioxide and carbon tetrachloride both have polar bonds and zero net dipole, because symmetry cancels the vectors.
- Getting oxygen's magnetic behaviour wrong. O₂ is paramagnetic with two unpaired electrons, which valence bond theory cannot explain and molecular orbital theory can - it is the standard example for exactly this reason.
- Confusing bond order with the number of bonds drawn. Bond order can be fractional in species with resonance or in molecular ions, and it is what determines relative bond length and strength.
- Treating hydrogen bonding as an ordinary dipole interaction. It requires hydrogen bonded to nitrogen, oxygen or fluorine, and it explains the anomalous boiling points that questions on this chapter keep returning to.

How do I work out hybridisation quickly?
Count sigma bonds plus lone pairs on the central atom. Two gives sp, three sp², four sp³, five sp³d and six sp³d². Pi bonds are not counted, which is why ethene's carbon is sp² despite having a double bond.
Why is molecular orbital theory needed if VSEPR already predicts shape?
They answer different questions. VSEPR predicts geometry; molecular orbital theory explains bond order, magnetic behaviour and why species like He₂ do not exist. Oxygen's paramagnetism is the classic case only MOT accounts for.
