Common mistakes in Atomic Structure

  • Applying Bohr's equations to multi-electron atoms. They hold only for hydrogen and hydrogen-like ions with one electron - He⁺, Li²⁺, Be³⁺.
  • Forgetting the Aufbau exceptions. Chromium is [Ar]3d⁵4s¹ and copper is [Ar]3d¹⁰4s¹, because half-filled and fully-filled d subshells are extra stable - and these two are asked disproportionately often.
  • Confusing an orbit with an orbital. An orbit is a fixed Bohr path; an orbital is a region of probability with a characteristic shape, and only the latter survives in the quantum model.
  • Filling orbitals by n alone rather than by the n + l rule. 4s fills before 3d because 4s has the lower n + l value, which is why the transition series appears where it does.
  • Ignoring Hund's rule when writing configurations. Electrons occupy degenerate orbitals singly with parallel spins before pairing, and questions on unpaired electrons and magnetic behaviour depend on it.

Why does 4s fill before 3d?

Because filling follows the n + l rule: 4s has n + l = 4 while 3d has 5, so 4s is lower in energy at the point of filling. Once occupied, 3d drops below 4s, which is why transition metals lose their 4s electrons first when forming ions.

What do the four quantum numbers actually describe?

n gives the shell and the main energy level, l gives the subshell and orbital shape, m gives the orbital's orientation in space, and s gives the electron's spin. The Pauli exclusion principle says no two electrons in an atom can share all four.
