Common mistakes in Mole Concept

  • Confusing molarity with molality. Molarity divides by the volume of solution, molality by the mass of solvent - and only molality is independent of temperature, which is why colligative-property questions use it.
  • Calculating from an unbalanced equation. Stoichiometric ratios come from the balanced coefficients, so balancing has to happen before any mole arithmetic.
  • Skipping the limiting-reagent check when two reactant quantities are given. If a question supplies amounts of both reactants, identifying the limiting one is almost always the point of the question.
  • Assuming 22.4 L per mole applies in all conditions. It is the molar volume of an ideal gas at STP only - at any other temperature or pressure you need the gas equation.
  • Treating the empirical formula as the molecular formula. The empirical formula gives the simplest ratio; you need the molar mass to scale it up to the molecular formula.
