The recurring difficulty is not the mathematics but keeping oxidation, reduction, anode and cathode straight in a cell you have just been handed.

Common mistakes in Electrochemistry

  • Mixing up anode and cathode between cell types. Oxidation is always at the anode and reduction always at the cathode, but the anode is negative in a galvanic cell and positive in an electrolytic one.
  • Using 0.059/n at a temperature other than 298 K. That coefficient already has 298 K substituted into 2.303RT/F, so any other temperature requires the full expression.
  • Writing the reaction quotient upside down in the Nernst equation. Q is products over reactants for the cell reaction as written, and inverting it flips the sign of the correction term.
  • Confusing conductivity with molar conductivity. Conductivity falls on dilution because there are fewer ions per unit volume; molar conductivity rises because the ions that remain dissociate more completely.
  • Forgetting to account for the number of electrons in Faraday's law calculations. Depositing one mole of Al³⁺ requires three faradays, not one.

Why is the standard hydrogen electrode assigned a potential of zero?

Because only potential differences are measurable, never absolute electrode potentials. The SHE is a defined reference point set at 0.00 V by convention, and every other standard electrode potential is quoted relative to it.

What does a positive cell potential tell you?

That the cell reaction as written is spontaneous, since ΔG = −nFE makes ΔG negative when E is positive. A negative E means the reverse reaction is the spontaneous one, and that driving the written reaction requires an external supply.
