Common mistakes in Chemical Equilibrium

  • Including pure solids and pure liquids in the equilibrium expression. Their concentrations are effectively constant and are folded into K, so they never appear - a frequent source of wrong expressions for heterogeneous equilibria.
  • Believing a catalyst shifts the equilibrium position. It speeds both directions equally, so equilibrium arrives sooner at exactly the same composition.
  • Applying a pressure change when Δn(g) is zero. If the number of gas moles is equal on both sides, changing the pressure does not shift the equilibrium at all.
  • Confusing K with Q. K is the fixed value at equilibrium for a given temperature; Q is the same expression evaluated at current concentrations, and comparing them tells you which way the reaction will move.
  • Assuming that adding water always dilutes a buffer's pH toward neutral. Buffer pH depends on the ratio of salt to acid, which dilution leaves unchanged - which is precisely what makes buffers useful.

Yes - temperature is the only factor that alters K. Concentration, pressure and catalysts shift the position of equilibrium but leave K unchanged. For an exothermic reaction, raising the temperature lowers K.

Why does a buffer resist pH change?

It contains a weak acid and its conjugate base in comparable amounts, so added H⁺ is consumed by the base and added OH⁻ by the acid. The salt-to-acid ratio changes only slightly, and since pH depends on the logarithm of that ratio, the pH barely moves.
