Common mistakes in Chemical Thermodynamics
- Getting the sign of work wrong. With ΔU = q + w, work done by the system is negative and work done on it is positive. Textbooks differ, so pick the convention in the equation you are using and apply it throughout.
- Equating spontaneous with fast. A negative ΔG means a process is thermodynamically feasible, not that it happens at an observable rate - the conversion of diamond to graphite is spontaneous and takes geological time.
- Using ΔH where ΔU is required. They differ by Δn(g)RT, so they are equal only when a reaction involves no change in the number of gas moles.
- Assuming entropy always increases. The second law requires the entropy of the universe to increase; a system's entropy can fall if the surroundings gain more, which is how freezing and crystallisation occur spontaneously.
- Using ΔG° in place of ΔG. The standard value fixes K, but the actual ΔG depends on the current reaction quotient and is zero at equilibrium.

When ΔG is negative. If ΔH is negative and ΔS positive it is spontaneous at all temperatures; if both are negative it is spontaneous only at low temperature; if both are positive, only at high temperature. If ΔH is positive and ΔS negative, never.

The system is at equilibrium - forward and reverse processes proceed at equal rates and there is no net drive in either direction. This is also the condition used to find the transition temperature for a phase change.
