Beyond the IITs: colleges JEE opens
JEE Main opens admission to a large network of respected institutes - the NITs (National Institutes of Technology), IIITs (Indian Institutes of Information Technology) and GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutes), along with many state government and strong private engineering colleges. JEE Advanced is the gateway to the IITs specifically. In other words, the IITs are the peak, but they sit atop a broad range of good engineering education.
Plenty of successful engineers and technologists graduate from NITs, IIITs and top private colleges, and outcomes depend heavily on what you do during the degree - your skills, projects and effort - not just the institute's name. Fixating only on IIT-or-nothing ignores the many excellent options JEE genuinely unlocks.

Choosing a branch that fits you
Which branch you study can matter as much as which college. Computer Science and related branches are hugely popular for their career prospects, but Electronics, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Chemical, and newer interdisciplinary branches (like AI/data science, and various specialisations) each lead to distinct and rewarding careers. The 'best' branch is the one that matches your interests and strengths, not just the one with the highest cut-off.
It's worth researching what each branch actually involves and where it leads before choosing by rank alone. A student genuinely interested in their branch will usually outperform one who chased a popular branch they don't enjoy. And remember that skills and specialisations can be built across branches - your degree is a starting point, not a life sentence.

Some students pivot to fields they discover they love more.
The key is to choose your next step deliberately - based on your genuine interests and strengths - rather than drifting or defaulting. Whether you continue in engineering or pivot, the discipline, analytical thinking and work ethic you developed for JEE remain real assets. Not getting the exact outcome you first pictured is a redirection, not a dead end.
