Solving vs analysing - the crucial difference
Most students treat a previous year paper as a test to attempt, check their score, and forget. That's a waste of the most valuable resource they have. Solving tells you where you stand today; analysing tells you how the exam thinks - which chapters it loves, how it words questions, what difficulty it favours, and where it lays traps.
The distinction matters because analysis is what makes PYQs a strategic tool rather than just practice. Two students can solve the same ten years of papers; the one who systematically analyses them walks away with a data-backed study plan, while the other just has ten scores.
Step 1: tag every question
The core of analysis is tagging. For each question in a paper, note the subject, the chapter, the specific concept, and its difficulty (easy/medium/hard). Do this across several recent years and you're building your own dataset - the same data any weightage table claims to summarise, except yours is current, accurate, and specific to the exact exam you're taking.
This is tedious but transformative. Once tagged, you can tally by chapter to see real weightage, spot the concepts that reappear every year, and notice which topics consistently trip you up. It replaces guesswork and rumour with evidence you generated yourself.

Step 2: find the patterns
With questions tagged, patterns emerge. Chapter weightage becomes visible from your tallies - which chapters reliably deliver, which rarely appear. Recurring concepts show up as the same idea tested year after year in slightly different wording; these are your highest-priority topics. You'll also see the exam's difficulty mix and its favourite question formats (assertion-reason, numerical, statement-based, matching).
For dynamic sections like current affairs or general awareness, PYQs reveal the type and depth of what's asked rather than the exact content. For static subjects, they're close to a syllabus map. Either way, the patterns tell you where to concentrate and what kind of questions to prepare for.
Step 3: solve recent papers under exam conditions
Analysis and practice work together. Alongside tagging, solve the most recent papers as full, timed, exam-like mocks - correct timing, no interruptions, real marking scheme. This builds the speed, stamina and time-management that knowing the content alone doesn't give you, and it rehearses the pressure of the real day.
After each timed paper, do a second, deeper pass: for every question you got wrong or guessed, work out why - a knowledge gap, a careless error, a time crunch, or a misread. That error analysis is where PYQ practice pays the biggest dividends, because it turns each mistake into a targeted fix.

Step 4: feed it back into your plan
Analysis is only useful if it changes what you do. Use your weightage tallies to reorder your study - heaviest and most-repeated chapters first and deepest. Use your recurring-concept list as a priority revision set. Use your error log to schedule targeted practice on your specific weak spots, revisited with spaced repetition.
Then drill the high-frequency topics as MCQs until recall and method are automatic. Done this way, previous year papers stop being a box to tick and become the backbone of an efficient, evidence-based preparation - the closest thing to knowing the exam in advance.
