How to read JEE Main weightage
Weightage is a historical estimate of how many questions and marks a chapter tends to contribute, worked out from past papers. For JEE Main specifically, remember the exam runs in multiple shifts across several days, so weightage is an average across many papers - a chapter's contribution can vary from one shift to another. Read any table as 'this is roughly where marks have lived', not as a promise for your particular shift.
That framing keeps you from the classic mistake of skipping 'low-weight' chapters. In a three-subject exam with equal marks and a broad syllabus, gaps are expensive. Weightage should shape the order and depth of your study, not shrink your coverage.
Where marks concentrate across the three subjects
In Mathematics, calculus and coordinate geometry are perennial heavyweights, with algebra, matrices and determinants, vectors and 3D, and probability also recurring. In Physics, mechanics and electrodynamics typically lead, followed by modern physics, optics, and heat and thermodynamics. Because Physics is application-heavy, its high-weight chapters reward drilling standard problem types until they're fast.
In Chemistry, physical chemistry concentrates marks in numerical chapters (mole concept, thermodynamics, equilibrium, electrochemistry, kinetics), inorganic is largely NCERT-based recall (bonding, p-block, coordination compounds, periodicity), and organic rewards mechanism understanding across GOC, hydrocarbons and functional groups. Balance your effort so no subject becomes a liability, then prioritise the heavy chapters within each.

Why JEE weightage varies - and how to respond
Weightage shifts for the same reasons it does in any exam: syllabus revisions, deliberate rebalancing, and normal shift-to-shift variation. With JEE Main's many sessions, no single shift matches the average exactly, so building your plan around a rigid table is doubly unwise here. A chapter that looks minor 'on average' might carry more in your specific paper.
The right response is a priority-plus-coverage plan. Front-load the historically heavy chapters, drill them under time pressure, and still cover the lighter ones enough to bank their questions. Because ranks hinge on a handful of marks in a competitive percentile system, leaving predictable questions unattempted is a costly habit.
