Common mistakes in Hydrocarbons

  • Applying Markovnikov's rule when peroxides are present. HBr with peroxide adds anti-Markovnikov by a free-radical route - and the effect is specific to HBr, not to HCl or HI.
  • Mixing up ortho/para and meta directors. Electron-donating groups activate the ring and direct ortho/para; electron-withdrawing groups deactivate and direct meta. Halogens are the exception - deactivating yet ortho/para directing.
  • Forgetting that only terminal alkynes are acidic. The acidic hydrogen is the one on the sp carbon, so internal alkynes give no reaction with sodium amide, which is a standard distinguishing test.
  • Predicting ozonolysis products by breaking the wrong bond. Ozonolysis cleaves the carbon-carbon double bond and puts an oxygen on each carbon, and working backwards from the products is a common question format.
  • Applying Hückel's rule without checking planarity and cyclic conjugation. A compound needs to be cyclic, planar and fully conjugated with 4n + 2 pi electrons - all four conditions, not just the electron count.

How do I remember Markovnikov's rule without confusion?

Do not memorise the outcome - work through the intermediate. The electrophile adds so as to produce the more stable carbocation, and since tertiary beats secondary beats primary, the product follows. That reasoning also gives you the anti-Markovnikov result, since the peroxide route goes through a radical instead.

Why are terminal alkynes acidic when alkanes are not?

The acidic hydrogen sits on an sp-hybridised carbon, which has 50% s character and holds the resulting negative charge closer to the nucleus. More s character means a more stable conjugate base, so acidity increases from sp³ to sp² to sp.
