Common mistakes in Organic Chemistry
- Applying carbocation stability order to carbanions. The orders are opposite: alkyl groups donate electrons, which stabilises a positive centre and destabilises a negative one.
- Predicting SN1 versus SN2 from the substrate alone. Solvent and nucleophile matter too - polar protic solvents and weak nucleophiles favour SN1, polar aprotic solvents and strong nucleophiles favour SN2.
- Forgetting that SN2 inverts configuration. The nucleophile attacks from the opposite face, so a chiral centre is inverted, while SN1 goes through a planar carbocation and gives a racemic mixture.
- Ranking acidity by structure alone instead of by conjugate base stability. The stronger acid is the one whose conjugate base is better stabilised by resonance, induction or electronegativity - which is why carboxylic acids beat alcohols.
- Confusing resonance with tautomerism. Resonance structures differ only in electron placement, whereas tautomers are distinct compounds in equilibrium with an atom actually moved.
