Common mistakes in Cell Structure

  • Mixing up the stages of mitosis and meiosis. Crossing over occurs in prophase I of meiosis only, and it is the reduction division in meiosis I - not meiosis II - that halves the chromosome number.
  • Confusing chromatid number with chromosome number. A chromosome with two sister chromatids is still one chromosome, and questions on DNA content versus chromosome number through the cell cycle depend entirely on that distinction.
  • Assigning organelles to the wrong cell type. Plant cells have a cell wall, chloroplasts and a large central vacuole; animal cells have centrioles and lysosomes prominently - and questions test the boundary cases.
  • Assuming all prokaryotes lack internal structure. They have ribosomes (70S), a nucleoid and often plasmids and mesosomes - what they lack is membrane-bound organelles.
  • Forgetting the ribosome size difference. Prokaryotes and the mitochondria and chloroplasts of eukaryotes have 70S ribosomes, while the eukaryotic cytoplasm has 80S - which is the evidence base for the endosymbiotic theory.
