Common mistakes in Genetics

  • Confusing carrier frequency with affected frequency in Hardy-Weinberg problems. q² is the homozygous recessive (affected) proportion, while 2pq is the carrier proportion - and questions often ask for the one you did not calculate.
  • Assuming a 9:3:3:1 ratio always applies to a dihybrid cross. It requires independent assortment; linked genes give a distorted ratio, which is precisely how linkage is detected.
  • Reversing dominance in incomplete dominance and codominance. Incomplete dominance blends the phenotypes, as in pink snapdragons, while codominance expresses both fully, as in AB blood group.
  • Getting haemophilia and colour blindness inheritance wrong. Both are X-linked recessive, so affected males are far more common and an affected male inherits the allele from his mother, never his father.
  • Treating the genotypic and phenotypic ratios as interchangeable. They coincide only when dominance is incomplete or codominant, not in standard Mendelian dominance.

Why do more males than females show X-linked recessive disorders?

Because males have only one X chromosome, so a single recessive allele is expressed with nothing to mask it. A female needs the allele on both X chromosomes to be affected, which is far less likely, so she is usually a carrier instead.

How do I approach genetics numericals quickly?

Write the parental genotypes first, then determine the gametes, and only then build the cross. Most errors come from starting with the answer ratio and working backwards. For Hardy-Weinberg, always start from q² because it is the value the question usually gives you.
